Residency for artists and researchers focused on motion-capture tools & handicap

Deadline:

Application deadline is 30.1.2012, 11:59PM GMT

Period: February – March 2012
Location: CIANT | International Centre for Art and New Technologies, Prague, Czech Republic
Who: CIANT offers the opportunity for a group or individuals to use a professional magnetic motion-capture system for a health related research or a project. We are looking for enthusiastic researchers, students, artists of any age who have basic experience with a motion capture device.

Motion-capture systems are widely used not only in entertainment industry, but they take an important role in serious medical applications helping health care professionals understand nuances of human motion; they help during rehabilitation and recovery from adverse events impairing the patient mobility. Motion data is also analysed by professional sport coaches to improve movement capabilities of their trainees in sport disciplines such as golf, tennis, football.

Selected participants will have the access to the professional magnetic motion-capture system Polhemus Liberty Latus which allows the convenient acquisition of motion related data. Captured data can be further used by multiple applications, analyzed during runtime or offline, sent real-time to multiple computers, recorded and replayed. The system supports 12 wireless markers providing precise 6DOF information with an update rate from 98fps up to 188fps in an area 8m x 8m x 3m. Compared to optical motion capture systems optical occlusions do not decrease data reliability hence no additional workload is needed to clean the captured data. System is not affected by changing light conditions and is easy to setup and calibrate. Acquisition quality can be affected by sources of magnetic field, though they are easy to remove in most cases.
